Project 1:

Atlantic & Burlington County Sites

62 - Great Island

Great Island is confined disposal site similar to the Bass River sites with a low berm surrounding the site, but time has created multiple breaches through the berm that allow tidal flow into and out of the interior. Most of the interior area is natural salt marsh with no evidence of much if any dredge material in place.  There is a distinct elevated deposit of sandy material covering the northern tip with heavy vegetation (Phragmities), but the majority of the site is level, with a sandy layer just beneath a thin silt layer.  This site is located in Atlantic City, adjacent to the city's new high school along the Black Horse Pike (US Route 40).  A core sample was taken in middle-eastern side of the site.  A grain size analysis revealed that the dredge material within Great Island is composed of approximately 74.9% sand.
