Project 1:

Atlantic & Burlington County Sites

63 - Great Thorofare

Great Thorofare is a confined disposal site located along the Atlantic City Expressway.  This site has an extended history since its southern margin berm is the former West Jersey Railroad Company mainline into Atlantic City.  The western end of the site was part of an extensive salt marsh mitigation project associated with the construction of the new Atlantic City High School in the 1980’s.  The deposited dredge material was pulled out of about 20% of the land area toward the east, some taken for the high school landscaping, and the rest piled higher in the central region.  Salt marsh vegetation was planted and the western berm was breached and a tidal channel created to feed the site with salt water.  Today the site is heavily vegetated, with large trees and Phragmities and consists of a highly mixed variety of sandy material from multiple construction projects.
