Project 1:

Atlantic & Burlington County Sites

70 - Flat Thorofare

Located adjacent to the NJ Intracoastal Waterway in the segment that runs behind Brigantine Island.  This channel has not been dredged recently, but this site and the Big Fish Thorofare site represent unconfined sites that were used once, long ago then abandoned.  The site was 95.7% sand with multiple high elevation mounds crudely resembling a dune field.  Storm waves across the open bay when tide levels flood the salt marsh have arranged the northeast-facing margin into a linear beach that is heavily utilized by marine species for nesting.  The size and remote location argue strongly that this site should be left alone as a legacy site.  Many shorebird species and the diamondback terrapin turtles have nested on these two sites for many years.
