77 - Perch Cove

Perch Cove is the smallest of the three sites along this section of the NJ Intracoastal Waterway and consists of irregular berm walls enclosing 338,977 square feet (7.7 acres).  The interior is completely vegetated and shows evidence of an extended period of non-use.  Two auger cores were taken to gain sedimentary information that showed the material was predominantly sand.  The lack of sufficient area, low, incomplete berm walls and an extensive natural habitat developed, probably make this a legacy site best left alone. Perch Cove is an unconfined disposal site located in the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge.  Former researchers have identified this area as a potential coastal heron rookery (Harris, 1989).
