Project 1:

Atlantic & Burlington County Sites

80 - Nacote Creek #1

The four Nacote Creek sites are natural New Jersey coastal plain uplands hills that project above the present salt marsh surface elevation.  Each is presently surrounded by marine salt marsh plant growth and its corresponding organic-rich silt sediment.  Coring showed typical coarse sands and gravel found elsewhere on the Atlantic County upland surface typical of the Bridgeton Formation gravelly sand that is the youngest geologic unit of the coastal plain.  Nacote Creek #1 lies along the bank of the Nacote Creek channel and was formerly used as a landing by Port Republic oystermen and clammers (Sooy’s Landing).  It was once connected to the mainland across the marsh with a brush-surfaced road, now buried by 70 years of further marsh growth.
