Confined Disposal Site
108 – Flat Island
Flat Island is a privately-owned island encompassing a series of small unconfined disposal sites. It is located in Stafford Twp northwest of 36th street in Brant Beach and east of the NJIWW in Barnegat Bay. The eastern shores of the site are very sandy and surrounded by moderate shoaling. Three sediment samples were taken from a 6-foot hole using a soil auger and averaged 45% sand with an average size of 1.25 phi. Salt marsh was penetrated at approximately -5.5 ft at each location.

The auger core extended to the salt marsh
originally present on this island. The
sediment deposited over the marsh consisted of 45% coarse sand (1.25 phi). This material is consistent with sand derived
from the beach and probably was provided to the bay during an overwash event
prior to historical time.
