Confined Disposal Site

117 – Main Point

Main Point #117 is a federally-owned confined disposal site and part of the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford Township.  The site is located on a peninsula with the easternmost spit extending out into Barnegat bay.   The southern and eastern borders of the site have sandy beaches with trees and shells lining the shoreline.  The southeastern region of the site has some confinement; berm walls here reach heights of 1-2 ft above the surrounding marsh.  A soil sample was taken in the southern cell of the site; salt marsh was reached at -4 ft.  The sediment consisted of 87.8% silt/clay and only 12.2% coarser sand (1.75 phi) so this site would not produce a sandy extracted product.

The auger penetrated 6.0 feet reaching the salt marsh at a depth of 4.5 feet.  This material was largely mud but the sand was relatively coarse (1.75 phi).
