Confined Disposal Facility
170 – Gull Island CDF
Gull Island is a county-owned CDF that is leased by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection specifically for dredge material placement. The ten acre site is located in Point Pleasant Borough. GPS and sediment data were not collected for the site; however, a study to determine the potential of reusing disposal sites for flood control material provides geotechnical properties for the site (HDR/LMS, 2006). The material appears to be mostly fine sand, shell, and minor gravel due to the vegetation cover and the existence of multiple bare spots that are very light in color. The dredged material was derived from repetitively dredging the entrance to Manasquan Inlet (Philadelphia Army Corps District) as well and enlarging or deepening commercial fishing basins in Point Pleasant and Point Pleasant Beach Boroughs. The HDR/LMS report estimated the amount of dredge material placed at the site to be approximately 500,000 cubic yards. Costs for loading and transport by barge and truck were cited to be approximately $40/cubic yard (HDR/LMS, 2006). Gull Island is considered a priority site because there is relatively easy access to the sandy material. The Bay Head to New York Amtrak commuter rail line runs along its western boundary, so potential rail access is a possibility. The HDR/LMS study examined multiple scenarios to determine costs associated with relocating dredged materials within the test sites to beaches, road projects, and flood control efforts.
