Confined Disposal Site
244 – Popular Point
Popular Point is a federally-owned
confined disposal site in Stafford
Township. It is located directly south of Beach Haven
West and its southern point is bordered by the Barnegat Bay. The
130 acre site is surrounded by a relatively complete berm. Other minor dikes
exist across the interior area, but upon examination, reflect the same pattern
of the Beach Haven West development lagoons to the north. This site was not intended for dredge
material, but as further expansion of the Beach Haven West community back prior
to the 1970 passage of the NJ Wetlands Act.
The site does not appear to have any dredge material filled on the
interior. The development was curtailed
because filling of salt marsh for housing development was discouraged following
the passage of the 1970 law. Later
mosquito ditching efforts cut through the dike at every other mosquito ditch
following the end of the development expansion. GPS and sediment data were not
collected at the site.
