Unconfined Disposal Site

246 – Inward Thorofare

Inward Thorofare is a federally-owned unconfined disposal facility (UDS) in Toms River Township. The 3.85 acre site is located between Mikes and Harbor Island. The west side of the site borders the Barnegat Bay, to the east is Inward Thorofare followed by Ortley Beach located on the barrier spit. The island is moderately vegetated with small growth gum, cherry and bayberry trees. The eastern cell is lightly covered in poison ivy and Phragmites. The entire island is covered by fine white sand. A soil auger sample was taken at the site; salt marsh was penetrated at -6.0 ft. below the surface. The sediment consisted of 98.5% sand over a six-foot depth with an average grain size of 1.25 phi. This material would make excellent recovery material.

One core was taken to a depth of 6.0 feet where it encountered the salt marsh that predated the dredge sediment. The material was 98.5% sand with a grain size of 1.25 phi.
