Project 1:
Unconfined Disposal Site – UDS
27 Herring Island #1
Herring Island #1 and #3 are state-owned unconfined disposal sites located on Herring Island. The island is located 0.5 miles north of the Mantoloking Bridge, directly west of Mantoloking in Brick Township. Site #3 is a heavily vegetated 4.7 acre site on the northern spit of the island. Site #1 is a lightly vegetated 5.4 acre site on the southern end of the island. Both sites have little to no confinement. Sites #2 and #3 were not surveyed due to limited amounts of unconfined material, but the Herring Island site #1 was surveyed and a single auger core was obtained that yielded very coarse sand over a 4.6-foot depth range. |

The 4.6 feet of deposited material consists
of 96.6% sand with some gravel with a mean size of 1.25 phi, the coarsest site
thus far. The location immediately
landward of the Borough of Mantoloking suggests that this sand was derived from
major storm-generated wave overwash of the spit prior to human development.
