92 – Story Island CDF

Story Island CDF #92 is a 7.8 acre NJDEP owned CDF located approximately 2.5 miles northwest of Beach Haven and 2 miles southeast of the Tuckerton Creek entrance in Barnegat Bay.   Access to the CDF is difficult and requires a high tide to allow boat access due to the shoals surrounding the island.  The CDF itself sits on the north extremity of a large salt marsh island called “Story Island”. The NJIWW runs parallel to the island on its west side.  The CDF is almost entirely covered in Phragmites and thick brushy vegetation, with the exception of the east corner.  The east corner appears to be clear of growth due to indications that water recently ponded in the section without plant growth (2007 oblique aerial shows water pooling in this region).  The average berm wall height is 10 feet (NAVD88).  Dredge material was present on the surface as well as an outfall pipe and a weir-box on the east berm of the CDF. Two sediment cores were taken at this site, which penetrated up to 10 feet.  Site 1, located in the southern section, was more sandy (73.2%) than Site 2 where the most recent deposits include 72.3% clay.  The TIN calculation revealed approximately 139,772 cubic yards of material within the CDF.
