Confined Disposal Facility - CDF

96 – Parker Island CDF

Parker Island CDF #96 is a federally-owned 6.8 acre CDF located in Southern Ocean County, directly west of Beach Haven Borough on Long Beach Island (This site was a marsh island in Barnegat Bay positioned approximately 600 ft west of the development and still within the municipal boundary of Beach Haven).  Parker Island is a confined disposal facility (CDF) with bermed walls, an interior filled with dredge material and a weir box/outfall pipe on its western wall.  Extensive GPS data was collected and a corresponding Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) was created in order to make a contained sediment volume calculation of 170,373 cubic feet.  The dredge sediment was moderately covered with Phragmites and brush.  This island is home to various species of wildlife and included nesting geese and osprey bird nest platforms.  Nearby marinas and the NJIWW channel have benefited from the position of this CDF.  Boat wake and bay wave erosion has produced scarping into the CDF berm wall on the southwest corner.

The core above was a combination of auger coring fro the first 6.0 feet followed by piston coring the next 1.6 feet.  The top section was fine sand with shells, followed by 1.3 feet of muddy sand and mud at the bottom.  The sand was medium grain size slightly less than the Cape May County beaches, but substantially finer than that found on the Long Beach Island beach.

The second site core went through a series of fine muddy sand layers likely produced by episodes of dredge material placement followed by the growth of a Phragmites plant cover that left roots in the soil.  The average grain size was that of fine sand with just 3.6% silt.  This is too fine for beach placement, but might serve other sand use needs.
