Confined Disposal Site – CDS

97 - Marshelder Islands

The Marshelder Islands are adjacent (east to west) islands located 1000 ft west of an area known as Spray Beach in Long Beach Township on Long Beach Island (LBI).  The island to the east (closer to LBI) is the location of a large unconfined dredge material disposal site (UDS), with a superimposed area of confined dredge material (CDF) sitting on top.  The confined disposal site is 150ft x 350ft, the unconfined area is approximately 700 ft by 700 ft.  Survey data were collected on the unconfined disposal site with soil samples and GPS data collected to define both varieties of material placement.  The confined site is heavily covered in Phragmites and low lying brush.  The berm walls are relatively small (2-3 ft NAVD88) and the interior is filled.

The core extended through the deposit of dredge material to the original salt marsh 6.0 feet below the surface.  The material was mostly a muddy sand with a medium grain size, but only a 63.1% sand composition.  This core came from within the inner confined part of the site.  The outer area is not confined and has a thinner cover of sediment.
