Delaware River & Bay Sites

Candidate Site

326 - Pedricktown South

This site is a large Confined Disposal Facility (562 acres) located in Oldman's Township, Salem County. The site is bordered by Route 130 on the east and the Delaware River on the west. The Pedricktown North CDF borders the site to the north. There is a network of internal dikes that makes the site accessible via four wheel drive vehicles. Areas of the CDF are open and unvegetated while other areas are densely vegetated. The site is owned and operated by the USACE and the existing capacity for sediment placement is 1 million cubic yards, as determined by the USACE. Sediment samples analyzed from the Cell 1 show ranges of 34.3% - 99.6% for silt and 0.4% - 65.7% for sand. As with most CDFs adjacent to the Delaware River, sandier sediments were found proximal to the discharge areas, whereas the finer grained sediments were found proximal to weirs. For Pedricktown South, sandier areas were found in the northern portion of the site, while finer sediments were found along the southern portion of the CDF. From the sediment samples, the Pedricktown South CDF was found to be much siltier than the adjacent CDFs to the north.

Pedricktown South is considered a candidate site not only due to the large amount of dredged material, but the wide range of sediment types, direct road access, and its use as a continual dredged material placement site for the Delaware River Deepening Project. The site is also operated and owned by the USACE, which has an interest in beneficial use of dredged material and regional sediment management.
